Tips to Make Your Ring Shiny Again

Jewelry is definitely one of the most popular ways to accessorize, and rings seem to be the favorite piece in this case. But, it’s not uncommon for rings to lose their shine or change the color a bit. This doesn’t mean that you have to say goodbye to your favorite rings, though. Different metals and stones can be cleaned in different ways so that they can regain their shine and color properly.

Identify the metal of the ring to clean it accordingly

In general, common ring metals include silver, gold, and brass. Of course, the ring might have some gemstones as well. If you don’t know the type of metal, it would be best to have a professional jeweler identify it for you.

Basically, you can always buy commercial cleaners specific for different types of metal and use a soft cloth with it. However, cheap rings should only be cleaned with your fingers to remove the grime.

Use the toothpaste method

This is one of the most popular ring cleaning tactics. Essentially, you want to get a cheap toothpaste that contains a high level of baking soda and fluoride. On a clean toothbrush, put some toothpaste and a couple of drops of water. Then, you can gently clean the ring as you would your teeth. Of course, don’t use this toothbrush for your teeth afterward. Leave the toothpaste to react a bit and then wash it away with water. You can also apply oils or citric acid to prolong the shine of your rings.

Get rid of tarnish with baking soda

A great way to remove tarnish from your ring is to soak it into the mixture of water and baking soda. First, you want to place aluminium foil on the inside of your bowl. Then, pour one cup of water into the bowl and add one teaspoon of baking soda. Once you’re done with this, you can put your ring into the bowl, but make sure that the ring actually touches the foil. Keep it in the mixture for half an hour or longer, if necessary, for the tarnish to disappear. When the ring is dry, you can apply a coat of clear nail polish to make it shinier and stainproof.

What about rings with stones?

In case you’re really fond of gorgeous gemstone rings, you should make it a point to clean them regularly at home, maybe even once a week. You can do this easily by soaking the ring into a mixture of warm water and dishwashing soap. You can also use shampoos or body washes. After around 40 minutes, brush your gemstone ring with a toothbrush and rinse with water. But, it’s also recommended that you take your delicate rings to the jeweller once or twice a year for a professional clean. If you want to maintain the ring’s shine, make sure to avoid products that are too moisturizing to mix with water.

Other effective ways to clean rings

One of the most popular tricks that people tend to use to clean their rings and make them shiny is the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. But, even though this can be a rather quick way to clean your rings and other jewellery at home, keep in mind that delicate pieces and rings with gems and stones in them should never be cleaned in this manner! What’s more, alcohol swabs can be used for spot cleaning if you just want to remove grime from your rings.

Keep in mind that the best course of action would be to take your rings to the jeweller and have them recommend the best home cleaning option for your particular rings. That way, you’ll be sure you won’t damage them in any way.
